Where Currents Cross
Fifty-seventh Street has always been valued for its easy access---by city dwellers and by the well-to-do out-of-towners who stay at nearby luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons or St. Regis. On and above 57th Street, dealers offer everything from ancient art to today's cutting edge. Uptown is where you'll generally find modern and the contemporary art on the secondary market. Today everyone is showing everywhere. Distinctions are not nearly so clear. According to many dealers, artists often have strong feelings about where they show their work, and a number of the area's galleries report consulting with their stable before settling on a location. Some artists preferred 57th Street, even if it meant having a small space space in which to exhibit.
