The fibers B. F. A. concentration in Surface Design and Weaving
teaches students traditional techniques applied to contemporary
design aesthetics. Students begin with an introductory class
covering basic print and dye methods, floor loom weaving, and studio
safety.
Intermediate classes in weaving and surface design provide more
in-depth studies in weave structure/designs, and hand printing,
discharge, and other dye processes on a variety of natural
fabrics. Advanced Surface Design courses explore
repeat-pattern screen-print designing for yardage. Advanced
Weaving emphasizes more conceptual approaches within the
understanding of traditional weave structures.
During the junior and senior years, students are challenged to
explore and develop personal, creative work that is finely crafted
and functionally and/or conceptually strong.
