Boston's contemporary arts scene is on the move

Banners celebrating the district's trendy new name-SoWa for South Washington Street-hang from street lamps.  And even established Newbury Street galleries acknowledge some healthy competition.

"There is an incredible amount of energy in Boston at the moment," says Abigail Ross, director of the Judi Rotenberg Gallery at 130 Newbury Street.  "With art in so many different areas of the city, the excitement is contagious."

Just two blocks from Rotenberg, another long-standing Newbury Street gallery is reestablishing its commitment to contemporary art.  Vose Gallery, the oldest family-owned gallery in the United States, has been located in Boston's Back Bay since 1841.  Long recognized for showing 19th and early-20th century work, the gallery recently began devoting exhibition space to contemporary artists.
