It is good to hem your canvas before you move to the decoration stage.
You can either use a sawing machine to hem the canvas or do it by hand.
Artist, Jason Lin uses a two-sided fusible web to hem his canvas. You can purchase this kind of fusible web at your local craft or quilting store.

Developing a Design
You can see through the above thumbnail that the design and composition principles of doing a canvas carpet painting is the same as all fine image making.

We can retrace the art of floor cloth far back into history. However, there is no correct way to create a piece of carpet painting.
You can start off by utilizing whatever painting medium your are comfortable with, and then develop your own unique techniques in the future.
The above canvas carpet was done by artist Jason Lin. He used a water-based medium for his creation.
Jason loves to paint since he was a young boy. He feels very relaxed while he is making the canvas carpets. He started with the background painting.
Jason loosely put the two colors in the background. Then he finished off the process with the bridge, birds and the two figures.
The source of reference for this picture making process is one of photos that he shot at the beach.
It is indeed a unique and original creation.
