Stimulating Ideas through Works
The fiber department at the academy occupies
the top floor of the New Studio Building designed by renowned Spanish
architect Rafael Moneo. Opened in the fall of 2002, the New
Studio Building offers state-of-the-art studios, new tools and
technologies, as well as the expanded student-run Forum Gallery that
brings student work to the public.
This new building offers a design and
provides an individual private studio space for each student and a
generous hub of task-oriented common workspace. Along the
east/west axis of the building, light-filled studios have high
ceilings and views of the surrounding woods. The
New Studio Building is located adjacent to the prestigious Cranbrook
Art Museum, dedicated to bring the best of contemporary art
exhibitions to the campus, as well as educational programming, and
includes the Network Gallery of current work by Alumni.
The ultimate focus of graduate study in
fiber at Cranbrook Academy of Art is the pursuit of individual
clarity and vision through energetic studio practice and articulate
questioning. Inherently multifaceted, fiber study at the
academy involves the exploration of the cross-section of art, craft,
and design.
