The School of Art's Foundations program provides students with
creative problem-solving skills and knowledge of techniques and
media in preparation for advanced study. Upon completion of
foundations work, a student must submit a portfolio demonstrating
proficiency in textile design. Several tracks of study are
available.
Students concentrating in Weaving explore basic and complex woven
structures through samplers and studio work. Advanced studio
course work offers in-depth exploration of on- and off-loom
processes and the opportunity to develop individual concept in woven
structure. Those concentrating in Fabric Design explore the
surface of cloth through work in screen printing, batik, shibori,
direct application processes, and advanced surface design
techniques.
The MFA program offers further development of individual concepts
within a chosen area of specialization. Personal interaction
with faculty and other graduate students are combined in a creative
and open-mind studio atmosphere to allow students to reach specific
goals in their individual artistic development. A written
thesis and an MFA exhibition are required to complete the degree.
