Creating a piece of felt scarf requires minimal materials and tools.  All the supplies you need to begin are wool, water, dishwashing liquid, a piece of bubble wrap, a piece of cloth, and a flat work surface.

A work surface, bubble wrap, and fabric should be larger than the size of a scarf which you are going to make.  For an example, if you like to have a scarf of 72 inches in length and 22 inches in width, your work surface and bubble wrap would be 80" by 30".  The piece of cloth needed for covering your design should be twice as large as the size of your scarf.  The path to create this scarf will be as follows:

  1. Lay out your design on the smooth side of bubble wrap
For a scarf, color is more important than the image.  Therefore, selecting three or four colors of wool for your design is the first step.  Open wools by hand before you lay them on the bubble wrap.  Continue this process until you fill out the bubble wrap.  There are different ways to lay out wools.  The key is to overlap wools, so they can lock with each other.

  2. Wetting the wool
Use a container to fill  dishwashing liquid and warm water.  1 cup of liquid will be good for 3 cups of warm water.  Cover your design with the cloth, then, wet the wool underneath.  Use a small piece of cloth to wet the wool by pressing down on top of the cloth.  It is easier to start at the corner.  Continue this step until all of the wool is wetted.

  3. Felting the wool
Roll up the entire surface with bubble wrap tightly.  Tie a few of strings around the roll  and begin to roll the felt with your forearms.  Push down with your forearms as you roll the felt away from you, then back toward you.  Open up the roll every few minutes; turn the felt to roll it up from the opposite side.  Repeat this procedure for a few times.

  4. To finish
Separate the cloth, scarf, and bubble wrap, turn the bubble wrap over and lay the scarf on it, then rub firmly over the entire piece with your palms.  When the piece is finished, rinse out all dishwashing liquid, smooth it out and let it dry flat.
