The MFA program in Textiles provides students with well-developed
expertise and knowledge to meet the specific requirements of
specialization. MFA students are expected to have proficiency
in both weaving and surface design, using the computer as an
integrated design tool.
GSU Textiles faculty and graduate student research technology
development is supported by the Georgia University Alliance to work
directly and indirectly with Georgia's textile industry.
Students may choose elective internships with the region's textile
industry. GSU offers GLA, GTA and GRA scholarships to
qualified students. Students work independently, keeping
contact through bi-weekly meetings with the faculty and other
graduate students. A written thesis and an MFA exhibition in
the School of Art and Design Gallery are required to complete the
degree.
The GSU school of Art and Design Textile Studio is in the heart
of the cultural and business district in downtown Atlanta. The
High Museum, Inter-national Museum of Design, Coca-Cola Museum and
downtown galleries, all within walking distance, provide artistic
resources. Industrial trade shows such as the Bobbin Show and
Home Textile Show are held at the nearby Georgia Congress Center and
Merchandise Mart and provide excellent opportunities to keep up with
industrial development. Dalton Carpet and Milliken Carpet
Industries are among the textile industries in the area that are
available as resources.
