An American master of the impressionist style of painting!
Guy Rose (1867-1925) received a traditional late
nineteenth-century academic art training, first in his native
California and later in Paris. In France, Rose learned the
luminous Impressionist painting strategies that he transferred to the
Pacific coastal sceneries he painted when he returned to California.
Rose mastered several styles in a variety of subjects, from early
still life to intimate figure studies, from picturesque scenes of the
French countryside to spectacular views of California's Pacific coast
at Laguna Beach and Carmel/Monterey. Like most painters, he was
compelled and fascinated by images without a driving need to
articulate the reason in some language other than the imagistic
one.
Rose believed that nature provides its own kind of truth and
beauty. It is important for an artist to be in nature in
addition to merely describing nature. The above painting was
done by using a palette knife after I visited the cliffs at the Ranchos
Palos
Verdes in Southern California.
