Developing Design and Color Expertise
The Professional Crafts Program was created
by Haywood Community College in 1977. It is a two-year
intensive study program of craft technique, design, and business
skills with focused programs in fiber, clay , metal, and
wood.
The Fiber Program has a strong commitment to
woven textiles in addition to dyeing, surface design, sewing, and
textile history. Students learn the "language of
cloth" in a rigorous full-time curriculum. Students are
spending the first year on building a foundation of skills while
developing design and color expertise.
During the second year, students are
focusing and mastering a coherent body of work. Small classes
and personal instruction emphasize individual expression.
Students are encouraged to emphasize their own strengths, whether
those are in production work or one-of-a-kind art pieces.
