Growing Up Green

The Helen and Peter Bing Children's Garden celebrates its first anniversary this summer, and the landscape that was brand-new last year is now well established and thriving.  So is the joy of discovery; for the plants that surround this playful space with the wonderful diversity of nature are more than mere decoration: they are the living embodiment of the garden's message of wonder, and an integral part of the experience for even the youngest visitors.

While exploring the elements of earth, air, light, and water, children are also discovering the natural world those elements sustain.  The landscape was designed to appeal to young imaginations, with an emphasis on unusual colors, textures, and scents.  This is meant to be a real garden for children, but one of such wonders as to truly engage their senses.

Many of the flowering plants were selected for their appeal to hummingbirds or butterflies, because no garden---for children or adults---could be completed without those delightful winged creatures.
