Los Angeles County Museum of Art
Art lovers around the world now can visit Collections Online, a digital archive of more than 40,000 records and nearly 20,000 images from LACMA's permanent collection. Representing almost half of LACMA's holdings, this exhaustive internet resource is one of the country's largest museum data and image banks. Many featured artworks are rarely displayed in the gallery or have never before been published. With the launch of this rich archive, the museum makes a huge stride in optimizing access to its collection and brings the scope and depth of LACMA's collection to new audiences internationally. Collections Online permits the viewer to magnify images and examine minute details. Visitors also can view images of several artworks simultaneously---a powerful tool for scholars, students, and collectors. In addition, online visitors can browse the collections, calling up certain artists, titles, donors, or even themes. Using a special "Random Images" feature, users can view a changing assortment of artworks, acquainting themselves with works with which they might be unfamiliar. "Storeroom Treasures" gives visitors access to rarely seen artworks. Public feedback so far ranges are "cool pictures," "easy to use," and "give us more!"
