Ho, Tchien, working with a mixed media of gouache and pen on rice
paper, her paintings are rich in color and symbolism -
contemporary expressions of ancient lore. She was born in
China. As she describes:" Owing mainly to my family
background, I was born an art admirer by nature."
Ho participated in many national and international children's
drawings contests since she was seven, and received numerous awards. She
studied in the Beijing Art College during the Great Cultural
Revolution and actually did not have much to learn. Basically,
she learned the art of drawing by groping in her daily experience.
To avoid committing political blunders, Ho engaged herself to
sketch infant subjects as a way to practice fundamental skills.
Her single greatest source of inspiration has been the imagery found
in the Buddhist cave paintings of Tun Huang: " Tun Huang Cave, the
most glorious and grandest gallery in the world, has been the
holly land for artists... I hope that I can pick up the work, the
precious piece of pearl from this treasury."
