Checking out the art while you check in

Behind the check-in desk at the new Chamber hotel in Minneapolis is a pickled bull's head in a Black-edged vitrine.  The sculpture is one of 225 works that fill the city's first boutique art hotel, recently opened by local realtor and art collector Ralph Burnet.

The hotel is a sister to Chambers New York which will manage the property.  Located in the city's Hennephin Avenue theater district, the hotel features a splashy array of works by young British artists, German photo realists, and fresh talent from China, India, and Minnesota.  Pieces by the most famous artists occupy public spaces, while those by younger and less prominent ones fill suites and rooms.

Ralph Burnet will help curate about three shows annually in the hotel's public gallery, with works by emerging artists or selections from his collection.  These exhibitions will be overseen by the hotel's art director, Jennifer Case Phelps, a former staff member at the nearby Walker Art Center.
