The 5-year double degree program represents an
opportunity for access to facilities and resources in nearly all
aspects of textiles study by pairing two well-established
undergraduate programs: the Bachelor of Art and Design (with Fibers
Concentration) and the Bachelor of Science in Textile
Technology.
Course work in the College of Design begins with a
firm grounding in design fundamentals, leading to a rigorous
studio-based art and design education with emphasis on design
process and idea development. Fibers courses are rooted in
learning by making with the hands in traditional techniques
(weaving, off-loom processes, surface design) as well as new
processes, experimental methods, and digital
applications.
Students balance fiber education with electives in
drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, color and light,
illustration, animation, and digital imaging. The college
provides studio space, a hand weaving-lab (Macomber and digital AVL
looms), a printing/dyeing lab, the Harrye B, Lyons Design Library,
several computer labs, and a wood and metals shop.
