The New York's Art Scene

A few decades ago, it was relatively simple: uptown was for classic art, SoHo for contemporary.  Today you have to travel a lot farther to keep up with New York's art scene.  You still need to hit SoHo, where the pioneer galleries and alternative spaces that colonized the neighborhood are now venerable institutions.  You can't miss Chelsea, where more than 170 galleries populate an art district that stretches from the Meatpacking District to the upper 20s.  From 57th Street to the Upper East Side, you will want to check out everything from cutting-edge installation to the Old Masters.

Some of the most exciting developments on New York's art scene are unfolding on what were formerly its fringes.  With the studio museum, the project, and a host of other new venues, Harlem offers some of the city's most talked-about shows.  Brooklyn from Williamsburg to DUMBO, Red Hook, and points beyond, beckons with an encyclopedic range of art adventures.  And with a new branch of the Museum of Modern Art schedule to open in Long Island City this summer, Queens joins the list of not-to-miss areas on New York's art map.  Meanwhile, as Lower Manhattan ponders the best way to rebuild, downtown museums and galleries are once again open for business.
