Focus on shapes and keep subject matters simple will help you create a more realistic image.

Working from large shapes:

After finishing a couple of canvas carpets, Jason decided to take his painting skills to a higher level.  Jason has studied oil paintings with a couple of art instructors in Southern California.  Through his studies, he learned that it is better to start at simple subject.

Think simply will help us build our painting quickly.  The above thumbnail is a good example.  With a #10 Liquitex bristle flat brush, Jason started by painting large, flat color masses of mountains in the middle ground.  Then he worked down towards the details, which are really just small shapes in the mountains.

The bushes in the foreground, and the background clouds were added after the mountains were done.  The tree at the right corner is very important because it balances out the whole painting.  Without it, this painting won't feel right.
