Getting a canvas ready for painting
The first step of creating a piece of floor cloth is getting a
canvas ready for painting. We need a canvas that is 4"
larger than our finished dimensions. Add 4" to both length
and width. A #10 canvas is good for this project. You can
purchase this kind of canvas at most artists' supply stores.
Before priming your canvas, eliminate creases with a steam
iron. Then, use any water-based primer and apply evenly to the
canvas. There are a lot of primers available. I use
acrylic gesso to prime my canvas because it will cover the weave of
canvas entirely and give you the most build per coat.
Please use your judgment to determine the exact number of coats to
apply. The primed canvas should feel stiff and the surface
smooth. After the canvas dries, you can move to the decorating
stage.
There is a free workshop of creating a floor cloth at the adult
education, San Gabriel High School in California. It is an on
going class. The class is taught by artist Nancy Porter.
