Fibers is one of 18 majors at the Savannah College of Art and
Design. The fibers curriculum is diverse, balancing
industry-oriented courses and experimental, fine art courses.
Fibers professors emphasize aesthetic and conceptual development
based on a strong technical foundation. High-tech methodology
and hand processes are taught side-by-side. Innovation is
encouraged at every level.
Graduates are prepared for a variety of careers in fibers, from
designing textiles to producing commissioned fine-art works.
In addition to pursuing fine art and teaching, SCAD fibers graduates
are working at companies such as Liz Claiborne Blumenthal Printworks,
Wesley Mancini Ltd., Milliken, Cone Decorative Fabrics, Doblin
Fabrics, Valdese Weavers, and other textile design firms.
At the undergraduate level, a strong foundation program prepares
students with essential drawing and design skills. In fibers
courses students gain aesthetic and technical proficiency as well as
an understanding of historic and contemporary trends in
textile. After a core group of fibers courses that introduces
students to weaving, surface design. three-dimensional fibers, and
computer-aided textile design, students pursue areas of interest
through electives and a series of senior studio courses.
