Taking shows on the road

In the past, when a popular Huntington exhibition concluded its three-month run, the farthest it ever traveled was the distance back into the vault.  Today, due to the fact that a revised loan policy approved by the Board of Trustees, major exhibitions can have a much longer life traveling to other venues and reaching new audiences in America and abroad.

Two important recent shows are currently on the road.  "The Beauty of Life: William Morris and the Art of Design" opened Oct. 14, 2004 at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Conn..  After closing at Yale, it will make one more stop at the Block Museum of Art in Evanston, Ill., before returning to San Marino.  Last year's photography exhibition "Edward Weston: A Legacy" is also headed for the East Coast.  It will be exhibited at the Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, N. J., from Feb. 6 through May 15, 2005.

Occasionally, individual works are loaned for exhibitions organized by other museums, such as the 2002 Constable retrospective for which the Huntington Gallery's "View on the Stour Near Dedham" traveled to Paris.
