Urbane Renewal!
Soho is a community of artists and dealers who've been here a long time and who appreciate history and the way the art world really grew and blossomed from the 1970s until now and want to prevent it. Despite no longer being at the center of the city's art scene, a cluster of nearby galleries continue to put on important and challenging exhibitions. While the sidewalks of SoHo are no longer congested with the art crowd ambling from opening to opening, they now attract a larger, more diverse population. The new mix of visitors has unexpectedly boosted attendance at the New Museum of Contemporary Art on Broadway, particularly in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks. So many visitors are drawn to ground zero, and they often walk down or back through SoHo. There is a reflectiveness that people are bringing to New York's cultural institutions now. They are really looking to art for meaning. In addition to the art business, SoHo is a full-service neighborhood. You can look at galleries, go to church, and then see a theater or dance program right here. The other neighborhoods don't have that. ----- to be continued
