No matter  what textile arts you are making, selecting a subject is the first step in starting this project.  Subjects such as landscape, still life, portrait, abstract, and non-objective types can all be accomplished with textile works.

A painter's approach to textile arts:

After selecting a theme, you should take a look at your supplies and materials.  Some textile works have to incorporate stitches.  At the beginning of your textile art career, you will want to save these kind of projects for your future art development.

Fabric collages and felt arts are good for a beginner.  You can go through fabric collages and felt arts for information.  However, you might want to start with silk painting if you enjoy brush works.  To create a piece of chenille arts, you will need a sewing machine with a walking foot.

After gathering the materials, you are ready to create your favorite theme.  It  is easier to start your work at background creation and then gradually build up your subject.  In order to have 3-D effects, sometimes, you have to add appliqués to your background layer.  A piece of fusing web can be used for the appliqués application.  You can purchase most of your materials at  your local quilts stores.
