The Still Life
In addition to landscape paintings, we will explore the subject of still life painting. Still life painting is an
excellent way to really sharpen our painting skills. Because the
subject matter is under our control, we can concentrate on painting, taking our time and selecting our favorite
objects.
As we progress, we will explore the various theoretical
approaches from which the masters created their arts and take up the same challenges those masters had to face. Then, we will learn that each
master had his or her own favorite choice of subject matters. For
example, Stuart Davis, an American modernist, was seeking inspiration
from the everyday. He began to include word fragments and
product labels, such as those for lucky Strike cigarettes into his
compositions.
Through the study of masters conducted by Sanchia Lin, we will
also explore the other masters' philosophies, techniques, and
experience in painting the still life. We will learn what
they're aiming to do and how they accomplished their goals. One of
the most helpful facets of these lessons is the paintings done by
Sanchia Lin. Those paintings are all derived from her gathering
of objects that she is attracted to and arranging them on the canvas in
relationship to each other. Alongside the pictures of paintings,
you can read how inspirations from the masters actually help to make her
paintings glow and develop.
